German NGO to train child amputees

Christ End Timer Movement (CETMI), a German non-governmental charity, appealed to humanitarian bodies on Sunday for funding to provide vocational training and medical care in Germany to 25 Sierra Leonean child amputees aged 11-16 years. For the project to start, CETMI says it needs money for air tickets to Berlin, artificial limbs, instructors and local transport of the children, who will be housed in a 40-room facility equipped with training aids. CETMI also needs money to meet the operational costs of the three-year programme which might be extended until the children reach adulthood. During their 11-year war, Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels carried out a policy of amputating limbs to discourage people from supporting the state. CETMI said 17.5 percent or 656 of Sierra Leone's 3,750 amputees have had both arms or both legs hacked off.
