About this role

Purpose

The TNH US Representative will serve as the primary representative of The New Humanitarian in the United States. The TNH US Representative will be responsible for securing financial support from both institutional and individual donors based in the US. This includes developing and executing comprehensive fundraising strategies, cultivating relationships with potential donors, and ensuring sustained financial contributions to support The New Humanitarian’s mission. The TNH US Representative will work to enhance the visibility and brand recognition of The New Humanitarian within the US. This will involve promoting The New Humanitarian’s work and impact, and establishing and nurturing strategic partnerships with key stakeholders, including media, high-net-worth individuals, government institutions, and humanitarian organisations.  

The TNH US Representative will act as an advocate for The New Humanitarian’s mission and values, representing the organisation at conferences, forums, and other public engagements, working to expand the organisation’s network and influence within the US.  

Additionally, they will assist with setting up and maintaining The New Humanitarian US, a private 501C3 entity, including administrative and financial management.

Other relationships: Works closely with The New Humanitarian Senior Leaders and the TNH US Board

Main duties and responsibilities  

Fundraising and Donor Management 

The TNH US Representative will be responsible for designing and implementing a tailored fundraising strategy and engagement plan, in coordination with the TNH external relations team: 

  • Identify and monitor new funding opportunities  
  • Develop a pipeline of potential new donor prospects  
  • Pursue new and further existing relationships with both institutional and individual donors 
  • Manage relationships with donors through regular communication, online or in-person meetings and other forms of outreach   
  • Develop concept notes and proposals for potential and existing donors  
  • Develop reports by liaising with TNH external relations, editorial, and finance teams, matching performance with deliverables, and following up with donors as needed   
  • Coordinate US fundraising campaigns (capital campaigns, crowdfunding campaigns) 
  • Safeguard institutional memory with consistent recording of relationship development, key documents, and stakeholder contacts, and updating the organisational US donor prospect list accordingly 
  • Report back on progress to TNH management and the TNH US board 

Visibility, Strategic Partnerships and TNH Representation 

The TNH US Representative will be responsible for creating and implementing marketing and communication plans to promote the organisation's work and impact in the US, in coordination with the TNH audience engagement and external relations teams: 

  • Represent TNH (or identify appropriate representation) in meetings with prospective/existing donors, partners, and clients   
  • Represent TNH (or identify appropriate representation) at external speaking engagements and events   
  • Develop opportunities for TNH to engage with prospective donors or audiences 
  • Plan and execute events that raise awareness and support for TNH 
  • Initiate, build and maintain strong external relations partnerships that enable the achievement of TNH’s strategic objectives, both globally and in the US specifically 
  • Assist with the launch of new products and editorial initiatives in the US 
  • Engage TNH in relevant US-based networks and membership fora (e.g. the Institute for Nonprofit News)  

Governance Management 

The TNH US Representative will assist in the day-to-day management of The New Humanitarian US, a newly registered 501c3 entity, in coordination with the TNH global entity’s administration and finance team: 

  • Support the development of the board of TNH US, ensuring that it is a viable organisation positioned for growth 
  • Support TNH in administratively managing the new entity, including submitting reports to tax and regulatory authorities 
  • Support TNH in ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and that sound governance principles are adhered to 

Skills, Competencies and Experience Required 

  • 7 to 10 years of experience in fundraising for nonprofit or similar organisations in the United States. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication in English. Other language competency is an asset. 
  • Proven capacity in networking, fundraising, stewardship, and donor relations capabilities 
  • Experience in leading fund raising and donor management through engaging with stakeholders proactively, building and maintaining strong relationships to ensure alignment and support for organisational goals. 
  • Fundraising analytics, proposal writing, donor reporting and communicating impact   
  • Record of accomplishment of fundraising for nonprofits in the United States from both institutions and individual major donors 
  • Abilities in applying specialist knowledge to provide expert insights and solutions concerning US fund raising and donor management 
  • Experience in partnerships, events, relationship management and/or public engagement    
  • Exhibits strong organisational leadership skills in driving organisation success, sustainability, and growth. 
  • Experience in developing and communicating clear plans for raising funding within the US aligning it with the overall organisational goals. 
  • Possesses strong financial acumen, effectively managing budgeting and resource allocation to support fund raising initiatives. 
  • Embraces innovation and leads adaptability in response to changing environments and emerging challenges. 
  • Leverages data and analytics to derive actionable insights, informing strategic decisions.
