Despite protests by the Bangladeshi government and rights groups, the number of border killings continue,” Adilur Rahman Khan, secretary of Odhikar, a human rights group, told IRIN on 22 May.
Since 2000, 945 Bangladeshis have been shot and killed by the BSF, while more than 700 have been injured, the group reported.
Khan’s comments come one day after Bangladesh called on the Indian government to conduct a formal inquiry into yet another shooting death of one of its citizens along the Indian-Bangladesh border - the 12th this year.
Mohammad Dural Islam, 38, a local farmer in northwestern Chapainawabganj District, was shot on 16 May while inspecting his maize field. His death follows another fatal shooting of a Bangladesh citizen in the same area on 14 April.
According to Human Rights Watch, India’s BSF have long been implicated in numerous cases of indiscriminate use of force, arbitrary detention, torture, and killings near the 4,000km border, without adequate investigation or punishment.
