Breakaway island holds elections

The breakaway Comoro island of Anjouan is holding legislative elections to strengthen their secessionist claims, the BBC said on Monday. According to the report an estimated 25 constituencies are being contested, with the majority of the candidates favouring a breakaway from the archipelago. The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) said that it would continue to try and resolve the conflict. Anjouan broke away from mainland in 1997. A referendum on the island at the time showed that an estimated 95 percent of residents favoured self-determination.
