UNITA attacks Uige dam

    UNITA forces fired three grenades at the Luqixi dam which supplies electricity to the city of Uige in a bid to close it down, the Portuguese news agency Lusa reported military sources as saying on Tuesday Captain Neto Pedro, the commander of a military garrison deployed near the dam, said UNITA units have been mustering in the region in an attempt to destroy the dam. Pedro said UNITA forces also intend to launch operations aimed at preventing the provincial government and non-governmental organisations from clearing land mines from the road leading to the dam. World Vision, which has been involved in mine clearance operations in the region, estimates there are more than 5,000 land mines planted by the two warring factions at the dam site, 15 km south of Uige, Lusa reported. Energy is supplied to the city of Uige by generators, but a shortage of fuels, caused by insecurity on roads, is hindering the operation.
