Political violence marred election

Country Map - Nigeria (Katsina State) IRIN
Katsine State fell victim this weekend to the string of civil unrest that has rocked the country for the last two years.
Political violence in Zimbabwe inhibited free choices at last months' parliamentary election, the Commonwealth said in a report released on Tuesday. The report, based on the findings of 44 Commonwealth observers, stopped short of declaring the elections were not free and fair, the Associated Press reported. "Most importantly, democracy in Zimbabwe has taken a major step forward," said the report, released in Harare and London. Observers reported "serious shortcomings" in the electoral process, with violence and intimidation in the weeks leading to the June 24-25 poll being their greatest concern, the Commonwealth said.
