Rift over Sharia plans in Kaduna parliament

Christians in Kaduna’s 34-member House of Assembly have charged that its 21 Muslim legislators are working on a bill to introduce Sharia in the northern Nigerian state and that this could force the federal government to impose a state-of-emergency there, ‘The Guardian’ reported on Wednesday. The Lagos daily quoted the Christian legislators as saying that the alleged insistence on Islamic law showed that no lessons had been learnt from Sharia-related riots that claimed many lives in Kaduna in February and May. Meanwhile, the Kaduna chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Tuesday advised Christians to disregard a claim by the six council chairmen that Sharia had become operative in their local government areas.
