UNDP launches environment and energy trust funds

The UN Development Programme (UNDP) last week launched two thematic trust funds to help developing countries pursue environmentally sound policies and promote energy as an engine for economic growth. The funds were officially announced by UNDP Administrator Mark Malloch Brown on 10 September and are designed to provide an opportunity for the donor community to address needs that are not currently eligible for financing from other funds. "The new trust funds underscore the fact that energy and the environment is and will remain one of UNDP's core development priorities," said Malloch Brown. The fund for environment will help countries put in place effective policies to protect the environment and reduce poverty, while the fund for energy will help countries produce and use energy in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable fashion. The two funds are part of a series of six UNDP trust funds designed to enable donors to provide additional contributions.
