New health scheme in Volta Region

A new health care programme, the Community Health Planning and Services scheme (CHPS), has been initiated in deprived parts of North Tongu District in eastern Ghana’s Volta Region, the ‘Daily Graphic’ newspaper reported on Thursday. Under the CHPS, a trained community health officer will live in the district and, assisted by a community health committee, will deliver house-to-house health services. Launching the scheme, the deputy district coordinating director, M.K. Ntumy, said that in spite of increased health education, HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases linked to poor sanitation continue to plague the local population. He urged members of the 27 communities to benefit from the scheme and take advantage of the resident health worker to learn more about personal hygiene, environmental cleanliness, safe motherhood and HIV/AIDS.
