Rights group denounces Bizimungu’s statement

The association of genocide survivors, Ibuka, on Friday denounced a statement by former Rwandan president Pasteur Bizimungu published in a weekly magazine ‘Jeune Afrique’, Rwandan radio said. According to Ibuka, the statement was equivalent to inciting Hutus against Tutsis. The group said that Bizimungu made a statement which “sows the seeds of hatred and divisionism claiming that if the prevailing circumstances continue, the Hutu will take up their machetes, once again, and butcher the Tutsis in the coming 10 to 20 years”. “It is on this note that Ibuka calls upon the Rwanda government to apply the existing laws to punish such people as part of totally eradicating the culture of impunity,” the radio quoted Ibuka saying.
