Chamber of commerce against signing of agreement

Members of the Burundian Chamber of Commerce (CCIB) on Monday said the current draft agreement will not lead to peace. The Agence burundaise de presse quoted a communiqué from the institution which urged the negotiators not to sign the agreement on 28 August. They also said they were against the signing of various protocols on different dates. “If the signing takes place on 28 August, the ceasefire should begin on the same date,” the statement declared. They expressed their support for recent demonstrations against the signing of the accord and asked the government to respect freedom of expression and allow people to express their views through non-violent demonstrations.
