Land mine destroys bus

At least five people were injured when the bus they were traveling on hit a land mine near the town of Barawe, 210 km south of Mogadishu, on 15 July, local sources told IRIN. The bus, which was traveling from Barawe to Mogadishu, struck the mine near the village of Roobow, 20 km north of Barawe, said Muhammad Dahir, an employee of a local NGO. The driver had lost a leg and passengers had suffered shrapnel wounds, he said. The incident has brought traffic on the road to a standstill. “Many of the heavy trucks are avoiding the road”, for fear of mines. No one knows who laid the mines, but locals have reportedly identified and marked the parts of the road they suspect to be mined. “People know where they are now, but there is no one to clear them,” Dahir said.
