Code of conduct for nurses, midwives to be drafted

Proposed laws and codes of conduct to govern and regulate practising nurses and midwives in Rwanda is to be drafted by local and international expert nurses in the near future, the Rwandan News Agency (RNA) reported on Tuesday. “Consultations are going on with nurses and medical practitioners from different parts of the country to draft the bill,” RNA quoted chief nursing officer in the Rwandan ministry of health, Mary Murebwayire, as saying. Murebwayire reportedly told RNA that a number of international expert nurses had already been consulted and that a review of other countries’ midwives and nurses laws had been conducted in order to enable Rwanda to institute practical and effective regulations. Murebwayire cautioned that enactment of such laws, however, would not address Rwanda’s severe shortage of nurses and midwives, which is particularly acute in rural areas of the country and has resulted in the escalation of maternal mortality during childbirth.
