Congo told to demobilise rebels

Burundi has rejected allegations by Congo at the UN that violence in the country is due to internal factors, rather than rebel infiltrations from the DRC. In a letter to the Security Council, Burundi’s UN representative Marc Nteturuye reiterated that his country was not at war with the DRC. However he said that FDD rebels were based at Kasenga in Katanga province, and he called on the DRC to demobilise and disarm them in keeping with the Lusaka peace accord. He also said the new war front had moved towards the shores of Lake Tanganyika and called on the UN Mission in the DRC (MONUC) to monitor the entire length of the lake.
