Rights group protests continued detention of leader

In a statement released on Monday, the main human rights organisation in the DRC, ASADHO, protested against the ongoing detention and ill-treatment of 87 military personnel and civilians, including Golden Misabiko Baholelwa, the president of its Katanga branch. In its statement, ASADHO denounced the ill-treatment of all detainees, noting that they “had been subjected to atrocious torture and other inhuman and degrading treatment”. ASADHO representatives stated that during visits when they were able to see the detainees, they saw scars on the bodies of the detained “resulting from torture”. ASADHO called on the international community to continue to demand the release of Misabiko. ASADHO also disputed a claim it alleged was made by Congolese Human Rights Minister Ntumba Luaba at a UN rights conference in Geneva where he reportedly said Misabiko had been released and had not been mistreated.
