UN welcomes Kabila-Museveni meeting

The UN Mission in Congo (MONUC) has hailed a meeting due to take place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Wednesday between DRC President Joseph Kabila and his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General of the United Nations for the DRC, said the meeting - chaired by Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa - was "a great step in the right direction". "It sits in the framework of direct contact at the highest level between the parties, encouraged by the Security Council delegation during its visit to the Great Lakes region in May," Morjane stated. "We hope that their meeting will permit a thaw in relations between the two countries." He said he hoped the meeting would also accelerate implementation of the Lusaka peace accord by "bringing together the DRC and Uganda to the great benefit of the two peoples".
