Great chance for DRC peace, South Africa says

South Africa has said it believes there now exists a greater chance than ever before to bring about peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jeanette Ndhlovu, the country’s charge d’affaires to the UN, hailed the results of the UN Security Council mission to the Great Lakes region last month, saying it was of “historic importance”. “The visit has also been able to re-focus world attention on the conflict in the Great Lakes region,” she said in a statement. On the DRC, she said South Africa hoped the momentum developed towards peace would be sustained and bring about a swift end to the conflict. “My delegation wishes to stress the importance of the international community’s support for the implementation of quick impact projects,” she added. “Ultimately, it is the people of the DRC who will determine their destiny. However, we believe that the international community can contribute to the restoration of peace, stability and development in the DRC.”
