UNMEE corrects details of complaint

The United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) says it incorrectly stated the location concerning a complaint over restriction of movement of the mission in Eritrea. An UNMEE press release on Thursday said that the incident had actually happened on the Dek’emhare (15.04N 39.03E) to Tsorena road, a route regularly used by UNMEE supply convoys, and a main access route to the Temporary Security Zone (TSZ) on the disputed border. It said Eritrean troops had stopped a logistics convoy and fired shots into the air on the main access route located south of Dek’emhare and just north of the boundary of the TSZ. An UNMEE press release of 5 May stated that a logistics convoy was stopped at a checkpoint manned by the Eritrean Defence Force (EDF) on the main supply road from Mendefera (14.53N 38.49E) to Tsorena, which is the main access route to the TSZ. The UNMEE statement on Thursday acknowledged the error in identifying the location and welcomed the Eritrean government’s “announced intention” of verifying the incident.
