Hundreds flee Gitega fighting

    NAIROBI
    Fighting between the army and rebels in the central province of Gitega over the weekend has forced hundreds of people to flee their homes, news organisations reported. The private Burundi Netpress news agency said rebels of the Forces pour la defense de la democratie (FDD) failed to reach the town of Gitega as their advance was stopped by the army. According to AFP, much of the fighting was concentrated in Gishubi and Nyabiraba, south of Gitega town. The rebels were reported to have infiltrated from neighbouring Tanzania.
