Police, demonstrators clash on separatist island

Police clashed with protesters overnight on the road leading to the main airport on the Comoran separatist island of Anjouan, AFP said on Tuesday. Demonstrators blocked the airport road and poured sand on the runway, the report said. It added that the protesters were said to be supporters of the island’s hardline separatists who oppose international mediators’ efforts to bring Anjouan back into the fold of the Indian Ocean’s Comoro islands, from which it unilaterally seceded in 1997.
