Drought response funding at 61 percent

Meanwhile, the ‘Strategy of the Assistance Community in response to the Drought in Afghanistan’, launched in June, had received almost US $41 million in pledges or contributions from donor countries and other organisations as of 18 August, UNOCHA reported in its latest weekly news bulletin on Monday. It said the contributions covered 61 percent of the total requested amount in the sectors of food security, the provision of potable water, protection of livelihoods, preventive health action, contingency planning and coordination, monitoring and evaluation. The Office of the UN Coordinator has said it required a minimum of US $3.8 million in additional cash resources to continue to support food-for-work projects being undertaken by WFP, as well as additional resources for water supply projects, livestock protection, seed provision to protect livelihoods, and for coordination activities.
