US wheat donation arrives in Pakistan

The US has donated 60,000 mt of wheat in an effort to feed Afghans affected by the worst drought to hit the war devastated country in 30 years. WFP programme officer Pippa Bradford in Islamabad told IRIN the donation was part of the WFP emergency operation request for 117,000 mt made in July. She added, “The wheat arriving has already been earmarked for immediate project usage in Afghanistan.” According to a WFP statement, the ship loaded with US wheat arrived in Pakistan’s Port Qasim on the Arabian Sea, and the food will now be transported to the landlocked Central Asian nation. According to a fact sheet issued in November by the US Department of State, the United States leads the world in humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan with contributions in excess of US $100 million this year. The aid was distributed through the United Nations and major NGOs for food, housing, health and education programmes, demining and refugee assistance, the report said.
