Security forces break up opposition rally

The opposition Union des forces democratiques (UFD) has denounced the use of tear gas by security forces to break up its party meeting on Friday, AFP reported. Security forces said they acted to stop an unauthorised protest, AFP reported. Party officials said the meeting in Nouadhibou, some 345 km north of the capital Nouakchott, was attended by 10,000 supporters. However, independent sources put the figure at 4,000. The UFD has increased its activities recently in its bid to force the government to relax the political climate, the French news agency added.
