Thousands of people in the Rwandan capital Kigali on Thursday demonstrated against UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s proposal to the Security Council to adopt a resolution calling on Rwanda and Uganda to withdraw their troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or risk sanctions. “ Yes there were demonstrations yesterday and more are planned today [Friday],” Rwanda government spokesman Joseph Bideri told IRIN. “The Rwandese strongly feel that because of the role Kofi Annan and France played in the 1994 genocide, they should not be at the forefront of this malicious proposal,” he added. According to state-owned Rwandan radio, the demonstrators stopped in front of the Kigali United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office and the French embassy.
