Government appoints gacaca boss

The Rwandan government has appointed the former secretary general in the ministry of justice, Aloysie Cyanzaire, as vice president of the Supreme Court in charge of traditional courts (gacaca) set to speed up genocide trials. “Her appointment is a step further to the implementation of the gacaca system,” Rwandan Prosecutor General Gerald Gahima told IRIN. Currently, there are over 120,000 genocide suspects in Rwandan jails. In order to speed up trials and reduce congestion in the jails, the law was amended to establish a sixth branch of the Supreme Court to deal with the gacaca courts.
