Ex-mayor appeals life sentence

Former Rwandan mayor Fulgence Niyonteze, jailed in Switzerland for crimes committed during the 1994 genocide, on Monday lodged an appeal against his life sentence, disputing witness accounts delivered at the original trial, the Associated Press agency (AP) reported. “They are statements invented by informers to destroy me and demonise me,” AP quoted Niyonteze, formerly mayor of Mushubati in Gitarama province, as saying. Niyonteze’s appeal against his conviction for murder, attempted murder, incitement to murder and war crimes was expected to last two weeks, the report added.
