Lacklustre polling campaign

Campaigning for a municipal election due on 28 May got off to a timid start on Saturday in Equatorial Guinea, with most of the parties abstaining from any activity, AFP reported. The three “radical” opposition parties - Convergence for Social Democracy (CPDS), the Popular Union (UP) and the Progressive Democratic Alliance (ADP) - are boycotting the poll, describing it as an “electoral farce”. Only the ruling Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) launched any sort of campaign, with a march through the streets of the capital, Malabo. The 11 other parties taking part in the elections, which are close to the ruling party, were nowhere to be seen, AFP said.
