Calls for condemnation of Ethiopian-launched assault

A statement from the Eritrean government also claimed early victories. It said that “fierce fighting is raging on the Mereb-Setit front” but that Ethiopia’s repeated assaults had been repulsed “with Ethiopian forces suffering heavy casualties”. The statement pointed to a lull in the fighting by 08:00 local time on Saturday morning. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested the UN Security Council to condemn Ethiopia, claiming the renewed assault launched on Friday was a “flagrant violation of the OAU Framework Agreement and Modalities”. It also asked the Security Council to “support Eritrea’s legitimate right of self-defence”, said a statement issued Saturday morning.
