Municipal election campaign begins

Campaigning for Cape Verde's municipal elections scheduled for 20 February started on Wednesday with music and parades on the streets of Praia, Lusa reported. Political parties and independents have fielded more than 1,000 candidates in the vote which is to be held throughout the ten-island archipelago. Lusa quotes Prime Minister Carlos Veiga as saying that the large number of candidates was "a sign of the increasing importance of local power" in Cape Verde. Veiga said he expected his Movement for Democracy party (MpD) to win in the capital with a clear majority, according to Lusa.
