Mengistu in SA for medical treatment

Former Ethiopian dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam is in South Africa for medical treatment, media reports said on Friday. Mengistu lives in exile in Harare, Zimbabwe. The reports said Mengistu entered South Africa on a diplomatic passport and that Zimbabwe had sought an undertaking from the South African government that he would be allowed to return to Zimbabwe unhindered. Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe granted Mengistu asylum in 1991, and has rejected requests for his extradition to Ethiopia.
