A boy walks past badly damaged houses in the Al-Resala neighbourhood of west Mosul. By early August 2017, more than 90 per cent of families who had fled the eastern side of Iraq’s second city Mosul had returned to their homes. In west Mosul, the situation for those wishing to return is more complex. Extensively damaged and littered with explosives, many neighbourhoods are in need of rebuilding and making safe. According to the UN, 15 of the 54 western residential districts are heavily damaged, 23 are moderately damaged and 16 lightly damaged.
