Hunger and related illness claim more lives than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined, the World Food Programme (WFP) said in a statement to mark World Food Day on Monday.
According to WFP director James Morris, global chronic hunger was on the rise, with more than six million people having died from malnutrition this year.
"Sub-Saharan Africa remains the most seriously afflicted area, where conflicts and the spread of AIDS have exacerbated the effects of hunger," Morris observed.
Morris urged international donors not to forget the scale of the problem in Malawi, where millions of people are facing a food crisis.
