Global Fund to meet on AIDS, TB and malaria

The Global AIDS Fund will meet in Sweden this week to review its role in financial efforts to curb HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria worldwide. According to Global Fund executive director Richard Feachem, the UN-administered agency currently supports at least 300 programmes in 180 countries. Feachem said in a statement: "The value of these programmes is already US $8 billion, so we have quickly become a large mechanism to finance the fight against AIDS, TB and malaria. But in the future, we need substantial funds to be able to be predictable and sustainable, which is the reason for having launched this replenishment mechanism." Among topics under discussion by delegates will be how best to support international programmes tackling the three diseases.
