G8 encouraged to do more for AIDS

Although encouraging developments have been made in Africa over the past few years, British Prime Minister Tony Blair says the problem of HIV/AIDS still remains. This was the reason why the UK had made Africa - along with climate change - one of two priorities during its chairmanship of the Group of Eight (G8) industrialised nations. Blair commented on the continent's poor financial status and said all the G8 members had a responsibility to assist Africa in tackling the pandemic. A Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail, quoted Blair as saying: "It is my view that ... we have not done enough. We cannot carry on as we are; we must act now, and follow through."
