Canada doubles commitment to Global AIDS Fund

The Global AIDS Fund has welcomed an announcement by Canada this week that it would more than double its annual pledge from US $50 million to $140 million. Global Fund executive director Richard Feachem said the additional support would enable the UN-administered agency to continue its aggressive approach to combating HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in developing countries. "Canada's increased contribution is particularly welcome, as this is a year where we face extraordinary challenges," Feachem said in a statement. Noting that the Fund needed a total of $2.3 billion to meet its commitments in 2005, Feachem urged other countries to follow the Canadian lead.
