Microsoft boss backs infectious diseases conference

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged almost US $337,000 towards an upcoming international conference on combating HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in Africa. Announcing the pledge, Wilmot James, director of the Africa Genome Initiative, which is organising the event, said the global community had yet to invest significantly in vaccine development. A local newspaper, The Mercury, quoted James as saying: "There are no vaccines for malaria or HIV/AIDS, and no effective vaccine for tuberculosis. The conference will look at the science of vaccine development and finding vaccines for the three killer diseases." The gathering will take place from 22 to 25 March in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
