Redoubling of efforts urged against AIDS

The chairman of the Global AIDS Fund, Tommy Thompson, has appealed for a redoubling of efforts against HIV/AIDS in Africa. During a recent visit to Zambia to mark World AIDS Day, Thompson said the world's hardest-hit continent should not be left to tackle the pandemic alone. Research shows that sub-Saharan Africa is home to more than 26 million of the 46 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. Thompson was quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying: "This war has caused more casualties than any other war. We need America, the European Union and everybody - nobody is going to be spared unless we all come together in the fight against this disease."
