US centre offers HIV/AIDS assistance

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has pledged to assist African and Caribbean countries in tackling HIV/AIDS. CDC said it would stand "shoulder to shoulder" with the countries by offering them both financial and technical support to boost the quality of their laboratory systems. The announcement follows a recent meeting of delegates from 16 African countries, the Caribbean and the US, who met in Botswana to discuss ways of upgrading and standardising laboratory techniques and research. Austin Demby, CEO of the CDC Laboratory Systems Support, said in a statement: "We have resolved to create a network with country-specific laboratory plans and policies based on internationally recognised modules."
