IFRC appeals for funds

The International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) is appealing for US $620,000 for Guinea, having received just over 67% of the $1.9 million it had appealed for the first quarter of 2002. The money is to go towards various projects involving the national society. Activities being carried out by Guinea's IFCR society include coordinating disaster response activities for refugees and displaced persons, supported training and recreational activities, and helping to initiate micro-credit. Its project portfolio also includes vaccinating refugees and vulnerable Guineans, especially in the southern areas of Kissidougou and N'Zerekore. The society has also been fighting female genital mutilation. In Kouankan, a refugee camp in the Kissidougou prefecture, "169 females were circumcised in February, including 17 under-fives, seven pregnant women and six nursing mothers," the Federation said in its appeal. "Several sensitisation meetings have been held since then with the women carrying out the circumcisions," it added. Further information is available at http://www.ifrc.org
