The federal government signed a contract on Wednesday worth some three billion naira (US $25 million) to fight erosion and flood related problems nationwide, The Guardian newspaper reported on Thursday.
Minister of Special Duties, Yomi Edu, speaking in the capital Abuja, said the government had become "increasingly disturbed by the widening phenomenon of erosion" in some states where people have been killed by floods, the Guardian reported. Edu said contrary to past tradition, the government would pay contractors promptly but warned them of the dangers of abandoning their jobs, the daily said.
States to benefit from this programme include Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Borno, Cross River, Ebonyi, Edo, Imo, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kwara and Rivers, the Lagos-based daily said.
