Hospital supply truck attacked in Mogadishu

A truck fetching medical supplies for two local hospitals was attacked at a checkpoint in south Mogadishu on Tuesday, local sources told IRIN. The truck, hired by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), was on its way to collect a consignment of medical supplies from the K-50 airstrip to be taken to the ICRC-supported Madina hospital in south Mogadishu, and Keysaney hospital in the north of the city, when it was attacked. The attack took place at the K-7 checkpoint controlled by militia loyal to Mogadishu faction leader Usman Hasan Ali Ato, sources said. The attackers killed one of the truck's security guards, and wounded two. According to one source, the attackers "took four guns from the truck", then let it proceed. The attack, he believed, was clan-based, and therefore "a revenge attack of some sort".
