International observers have no knowledge of UNITA peace proposals

Russia's ambassador to Angola was quoted by Lusa on Thursday as saying that the three international observers in the country as part of the peace process "had no knowledge of any concrete peace proposal presented by UNITA". The report said Sergei Andreev is one of the three diplomats from the United States, Russia and Portugal comprising the peace process, together with the Angolan minister for external affairs. Reports said that he was speaking after a regular meeting of the three ambassadors with Angolan Minister of External Affairs Joao Miranda. Andreev said that the process was still in progress and that it had "never been interrupted". On the Angolan government's intention to hold elections next year, the ambassador said that "it is a necessary exercise of democracy". "The government's intention to hold elections and to follow the form of democratic norms is always welcome," added Andreev.
