Army destroys UNITA base

The Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) claimed on Wednesday that they destroyed a key UNITA base in the province of Kwanza Norte. Lusa quoted a military source as saying that the base at Mufumbo, about 370 km east of Luanda, was captured on Monday after a series of clashes lasting two days. The source claimed that about 20 UNITA troops were killed in the fighting. Three FAA troops were killed, the report said. According to the report, the FAA considered the Mufumbo base crucial to UNITA's operations in the province. An FAA source was quoted as saying that the Angolan army had been "conducting cleansing operations in areas considered under most UNITA control since the end of September". He said a total of 80 UNITA soldiers were killed in these operations.
