Ethiopian POWs repatriated

The government of Eritrea said on Wednesday that it had repatriated 24 Ethiopian prisoners-of-war (POWs) for "health reasons", but called on the international community to put pressure on Ethiopia to release Eritrean POWs allegedly held for over three years. A press statement from the Eritrean foreign ministry said the POWs were repatriated in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), bringing the total of Ethiopian POWs repatriated since the signing of the December 2000 Algiers Peace Agreement to 629. On 14 September 2001, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling on Eritrea and Ethiopia to accelerate the release of POWs under the auspices of the ICRC.
