ActionAid supports education

The Ghanaian chapter of the international non-governmental organization ActionAid has donated English and mathematics textbooks to eight primary schools in Tamale, Northern Region, the ‘Daily Graphic’ reported on Tuesday. ActionAid has distributed at least 3,700 mathematics books and 3,200 English language books to Tamale area schools this year. ActionAid said its effort was aimed at easing the financial burden on poor parents who every year have difficulty in paying for school equipment and other needs, the Accra daily reported. The NGO has also built schools for needy communities in the area. Education is compulsory for all children from six to 16 years. Ghana boasts a 61.5-percent adult literacy rate for females above 15 years old and 79.4 percent for males in the same age category, according to the UN Human Development Report of 2001.
