Sweden pledges continued support for dialogue

The government of Sweden announced on Thursday that it would continue to support the inter-Congolese dialogue, a peace mediation initiative mandated by the Lusaka peace agreement to take place among civic groups, political parties, government representatives and rebels of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with a grant of US $108,682 (SEK 1.15 million). Preparatory discussions for the dialogue are scheduled to begin on 20 August in Gabarone, capital of Botswana. The office of Sir Ketumile Masire, former president of Botswana and facilitator of the inter-Congolese dialogue, announced on Thursday that country-wide election of civil society representatives had been completed.
