French medical team aids local population

A 10-day humanitarian operation led by a medical team from France was due to begin on Thursday in the northern department of Matam, the state-owned daily newspaper, ‘Le Soleil’, reported. The project, in coordination with a local hospital and medical centre, aims to set up a medical and surgical unit for local residents and offer free treatment in specialist areas including orthopaedics, vascular surgery and gynaecology. The initiative, launched by an association known as Fuuta Sante-Matam, is the brainchild of Matam locals now living in France who want to improve living conditions and health care in their original home area.
