Flood update

The number of people displaced by floods in Mozambique's four flood-affected provinces has risen to 235,000 of whom 180,000 are in temporary accommodation centres, the latest report from the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Maputo said on Friday. "Continuing rain is aggravating conditions in the accommodation centres in the Zambezi valley since shelter materials are in short supply as are water supply and sanitation materials," the update said. It added that an assessment by WFP, World Vision International (WVI) and the government's disaster authority - the INGC - reported that around 8 percent of children in accommodation centres in Mutarara district on the northern Tete province were suffering from malnutrition. "In Zambezia province malnutrition is a concern in the Mopeia district (in the south of the province) where 20-25 percent of women and 8 percent of children are reported to be HIV-positive. MSF is assisting the ministry of health to set up health posts in accommodation centres in Mopeia," the update noted.
