Cholera outbreak in Barava

A cholera outbreak in the coastal town of Barava, 240 km south of Mogadishu, is reported to have claimed the lives of 97 people. The Mogadishu daily ‘Qaran’ reported on 7 January that the outbreak in Barava, first reported on 26 December last year, showed no significant change for the better. Many people are dying in the outlying villages without any medical help, it reported. However, Dr Roberto De Bernardi of UNICEF told IRIN that between 26 December of last year and 7 January of this year a total of 167 cases were brought to the cholera treatment centre (CTC) in Barava and said the death toll had reached 22. These numbers reflect the people that were brought to the CTC, but do not include those that may have died in the town itself or in the outlying areas, COSV an Italian NGO working in the area told IRIN. According to this source there are teams of qualified nurses from COSV, UNICEF and WHO on the scene.
