EU welcomes signing, pledges more support

The European Union (EU) on Tuesday welcomed the signing of the accord calling it a “key point in this long and difficult peace process”. In a statement, EU Commission President Romano Prodi, said the draft agreement was not the final result, but was an achievement in an ongoing process, that still needed more efforts in order to establish a lasting peace. “I, personally, call on the Burundian people to go further and overcome the remaining obstacles, the result will be peace,” Prodi noted. He said that the Commission is reinforcing its funds for enhanced humanitarian aid totaling over US $49 million. “This includes our new Rehabilitation Programme for over US $7 million to improve the poorest living conditions, to support the justice sector and future demobilisation programmes and reconciliation activities,” he said.
